Susan Wojcicki, the current CEO of YouTube, is stepping down from her position, and Indian-American Neal Mohan will take over as the new leader of the streaming company. Mohan will join a growing roster of CEOs of Indian descent leading US-based multinational corporations, including Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe, and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet.
Wojcicki wrote in a note: “Today, after over 25 years here, I’ve chosen to stand down from my position as YouTube’s CEO (since 2014). I feel that now is the appropriate moment to do this since YouTube has a fantastic leadership team in place.
Stanford-educated electrical engineer Mohan joined Google in 2007 when DoubleClick was acquired. In 2015, he was appointed Chief Product Officer, and since then, he has been working to develop YouTube Shorts and Music.
In her statement, Wojcicki stated that assembling an outstanding leadership team was one of her top goals after becoming CEO of YouTube in 2014. Neal Mohan, who will take over as SVP and new head of YouTube, was one of those leaders, she noted.
About Neal Mohan:
Mohan’s position at Google expanded when he joined in 2007 and is now the SVP of Display and Video Advertising. He has established a top-notch product and UX team since taking on the post of chief product officer in 2015, and he has been instrumental in the introduction of some of the company’s largest products, including YouTube TV, YouTube Music and Premium, and Shorts. He oversaw the Trust and Safety group as well.
The most exciting potential for YouTube is ahead because of everything we’re doing with Shorts, streaming, and subscriptions, as well as the promises of AI, and Neal is the best person to lead us, according to Wojcicki.
He has a great understanding of our company, our workers, our creative and user communities, and our product. Neal will do a great job of leading YouTube.
Mohan tweeted his appreciation to Wojcicki and said, “I’m delightful to continue this fantastic and essential endeavour. I’m looking forward to what’s coming up.
Mohan formerly worked for Microsoft and is a member of the boards of 23andMe and Stitch Fix. Mohan earned both an MBA and an electrical engineering degree from Stanford.
