Mercedes-Benz and Google have agreed on a long-term agreement that will give the German manufacturer control over its intellectual property (IP) and market while providing Google’s navigation, maps, and YouTube to drivers.

It’s a unique agreement that aims to provide users with the Google services they desire without giving up control of the complete operating system in the automobile.

Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, stated during a news conference on Wednesday at an event at the company’s research and development facility in Sunnyvale, California, “This is a licensing deal that is a ‘win-win’ for both sides. We are the stack’s complete architects.” Mercedes-Benz will also utilize Google Maps data to allow features that help with driving, such as adjusting speed automatically before crossroads, roundabouts, and bends.

Mercedes-Benz will provide its consumers access to the first new capabilities through this connection, including Google Place Details. The businesses have also committed to investigating expanded collaboration utilizing open infrastructure, data, and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions from Google Cloud. Under this collaboration, the YouTube app will also include in the Mercedes-Benz infotainment system.

A whole suite of Google services, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and more, have been integrating into the vehicles of other carmakers, including General Motors, Renault, Nissan, and Ford.
